Why Egyptian Cotton?

Author: iheartdown

We’ve all heard the praises sung for Egyptian cotton.  Egyptian cotton is used to create every type of bedding item imaginable, but it seems Egyptian bed sheets are the ones we hear about the most.  Why is Egyptian cotton considered superior?  It has a long fiber that is smaller in diameter, but stronger than other varieties of cotton.  Smaller yarn means a higher thread count is possible, creating a lightweight fabric that breathes well and wears like iron.  Lint production by Egyptian cotton is reduced, so the fabric does not pill as other materials may.

When the bedding is new, Egyptian cotton can have a harder feel than other sheet materials, but the cotton will soften and actually improve with each subsequent laundering.  Higher thread count when purchasing sheets is not the only measurement of quality, but if the bedding is also constructed of Egyptian cotton an Egyptian could last for many years–even decades–if cared for properly.

Egyptian Cotton

Author: iheartdown

I think the first time I ever encountered Egyptian bed sheets was on a trip to Hawaii about seven years ago.  I was astonished at how comfortable the sheets were.  I’d never slept on something so soft and comfortable before.  It was as if the sheets themselves were soothing me to sleep!  I had to know what kind of material it was so I stripped the bed in search of a tag that would clue me in.  Unfortunately there wasn’t one.

I had to resort to desperate measures and ask the front desk.  They told me they were Egyptian Cotton and I was like “What the heck is Egyptian Cotton??”  Now I know and I won’t sleep on anything else.  I spent some time paying hundreds for these sheets but not anymore.  I can save my money and I don’t even have to search the stores!
